Anittel is one of the largest and fastest-growing IT & Telecommunications companies in Australia, providing high-level support and advanced technology consultation to businesses. Seventeen regional and metropolitan offices across the country support a wide range of industries including corporate, education, health, finance and government. Anittel partners with leading vendors such as Microsoft and VMware to help organizations transition to the cloud.

Anittel has 12 data centers located across Australia, with five centers that support its hosted infrastructure. The IT environment is 100 percent virtualized, and the growing IT infrastructure includes 400 – 500 virtual machines (VMs). The exact number varies each month based on customers’ needs.

In the beginning stages of virtualization, the backup tool that Anittel used was satisfactory. However, as the environment grew, performance and accessibility issues began to occur. “As we virtualized more and more of the environment, we noticed that our backups were taking longer and longer, and change tracking was inconsistent and unreliable,” said Steven Crockett, Chief Technology Officer for Anittel,” “The final straw came when we were unable to recover 400 gigabytes of data from that backup system – the data was not even there despite the ‘successful’ backups. Fortunately we had alternative systems in place, but we knew then we had to look for an alternative solution.”

Crockett and his colleagues needed a scalable backup solution to protect a growing number of VMs, and the ability to quickly restore a VM should a mishap occur. “We also wanted deduplication to save on storage space, ESXi support, and flexible licensing options,” he said.

Veeam Software: Support from Start to Finish

Anittel’s IT team tried a number of backup solutions but quickly realized that Veeam® Backup & Replication™ met all its criteria. “From our first trial run, we knew that Veeam was the data protection solution we needed for our IT infrastructure,” Crockett said. “We also knew, right from the start, that we wanted to partner with Veeam Software. A key differentiator for us is our partnerships with market‑leading IT vendors. Veeam certainly fits that description and is a nice complement to our other virtualization partners.”

The scalability, consistency and reliability of Veeam Backup & Replication make it a good match for Anittel. In addition to protecting all VMs in the company’s growing hosted environment, Veeam provides quick recovery options, so Crockett and his team can recover an entire VM or an individual object from any application or file system quickly — all from the same image-level backup. “The Instant VM Recovery capability is a stand-out feature, and we never have to worry about losing client data,” he said. “Veeam’s support of ESXi really solidified our decision to go with Veeam.”

Backups are now much faster, saving valuable time and resources. “Veeam is leaps and bounds above our former backup solution,” Crockett explained. “Backups are almost 10 times faster, cutting backup time from about 12 hours to one or two hours. Change tracking with our old solution was very ‘buggy’ and most of the time it just didn’t work. Now we can track changes effortlessly.”

Veeam Backup & Replication also helps Anittel reduce operational overhead through decreased storage costs. “Veeam’s built-in deduplication and compression features are a huge bonus,” Crockett noted. “Before Veeam, we had a big storage requirement that constituted a premium storage price. We now require less than a third of the storage space to back up the same amount of data.”

Anittel finds Veeam’s licensing model very cost effective. “Veeam’s willingness to negotiate on the transfer of our existing licenses was an important factor and one of the key things we considered when choosing Veeam,” Crockett explained. “We purchased an initial bundle of licenses outright, and can add incremental licenses as we need them. That gives us a good ROI and frees up funds for other needs.”

Anittel sees its partnership with Veeam as an important value-add for both existing and new customers as they move into the cloud. “We’ve enjoyed phenomenal success using Veeam to back up and protect our own servers, and want to offer that same peace-of-mind to our customers,” Crockett explained. “We’re looking at ways to efficiently back up our customers in the cloud and provide off-site backup for them. Veeam’s 2-in-1 backup and replication will play a huge role in those efforts.”
