PKO Bank Polski is one of the most well-known banks in Poland. Its sister company, PKO Ubezpieczenia, established itself in the insurance sector by offering its services alongside PKO Bank Polski’s products. The insurer has now set its sights on expanding its market share across Poland.
“We’re looking to expand into insurance services for home, travel, health and more,” said Robert Dźwigulski, Director of the IT Infrastructure Department at PKO Ubezpieczenia. “Ultimately, our aim is to become one of the top five insurers in Poland.”
With customer churn a big challenge in the insurance industry, PKO Ubezpieczenia aims to provide a consistently high level of service to inspire long-term loyalty. As the company expanded, its data grew massively, increasing the pressure on IT systems. PKO Ubezpieczenia found that its previous data protection solution was failing to keep pace with growth.
“It could take as long as 24 hours to create a backup using our previous Arcserve solution,” said Dźwigulski. “We had to back up each virtual machine [VM] individually, which was hugely timeconsuming, and we didn’t have any granular restore capabilities. We wanted a more modern alternative that would help us prepare for any event that might come our way.”
PKO Ubezpieczenia chose to deploy Veeam Availability Suite to enable new resilience and efficiency for its approach to data protection. The company engaged long-term partner BizTech Konsulting SA to help with its decision process.
“The search for the perfect solution took a while, though we quickly ruled out a lot of options due to a lack of documentation, compatibility with our environment or a clear pricing model,” said Dźwigulski. “BizTech recommended Veeam technology and performed a proof of concept for us. This experience showed us that Veeam could deliver everything we wanted for a data protection solution to last us ten or 15 years, even with significant growth on the horizon.”
The PKO Ubezpieczenia IT team was especially attracted to the transparent licensing model offered by Veeam. The company used the Veeam pricing calculator to get immediate insight into expected costs.
“So many backup vendors include hidden costs or force you to over-provision licenses to ensure your IT environment is protected,” explained Dźwigulski. “Veeam isn’t like that— we can find out straight away how our costs will change if we introduce new workloads or adjust our subscription term. The predictability of Veeam pricing is a key advantage for a fastchanging, dynamic company like ours.”
By deploying Veeam technology, PKO Ubezpieczenia simplified backup and replication processes significantly. The company can now restore specific files or emails, whether they are deleted accidentally or corrupted. It also runs periodic test runs for backup and data restore procedures periodically.
“My team all speak highly of Veeam because it’s made our lives easier,” said Dźwigulski. “Built-in automation means we no longer have to back up VMs one-by-one. Veeam helps us better serve the company’s users, recovering lost data in just minutes so they can work more productively. We test our data protection measures at random periods to check everything is working correctly and so far, so good, which allows me to get a better night’s sleep!”
