Purpose

This article is intended to document how Backup Copy’s retention is enforced.

Starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 11,  there are two diferent retention policy schemes for backup copy jobs:

In the past, this article contained an animated GIF that demonstrated the method by which GFS restore points were created by a Backup Copy job. Those animations were created due to the complexity of how those GFS points were created and their retention was enforced. Starting with Veeam Backup & Replication v11, the GFS creation process has been changed and simplified significantly. Those now outdated animations have been removed from this article to prevent confusion. For historical reference, below are links to the GFS Retention explanation for versions prior to Veeam Backup & Replication 11.
