#1 Global Leader in Data Protection & Ransomware Recovery

Veeam Delivers Hyper-Available Data at Massive Scale for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Producing $200,000 in Annual Savings

Veeam supports UNLV’s journey to become a Top Tier research university by providing hyper-availability for its critical digital assets and ensures reliable recovery and protects data

BAAR, Switzerland – December 20: Veeam Software, the leader in Intelligent Data Management for the Hyper-Available Enterprise, today announced that the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has chosen Veeam to ensure that critical data and applications, especially those associated with its intellectual property used by faculty and students, are continuously available, fostering a creative and innovative environment for meaningful research.

Veeam will help UNLV deliver a comprehensive, data-driven and easy-to-manage hyper-availability solution that not only ensures every backup is recoverable and meets compliance requirements, but also will produce annual savings of $200,000 for the university, according to UNLV officials.

“In a Top Tier university, IT must function as a strategic partner and not as a cost center,” Nicpon continued. “Veeam is feature rich, yet the initial cost was similar to the renewal cost — just the renewal cost — of one of the previous solutions,” he explains. “When you combine what we saved by eliminating those solutions with the management hours we saved is roughly $200,000 per year. Veeam has been a huge win for us.”

UNLV has grown from a small branch college that opened its doors for the first time in 1957 into a thriving urban research institution that serves the needs of more than 40,000 users. For the academic community of such scale, data loss and downtime would be devastating. Besides setting researchers back years and causing them to lose funding, data loss could prevent students from submitting assignments and graduating on time.

“Data is the driving force at all universities because it enables innovation. Our data must be hyper-available to support our researchers,” said John Nicpon, Manager of Systems Engineering at UNLV. “Veeam helps us create an academic environment where faculty and students can make cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs. Veeam is the ace in our pocket for intelligent data management.”

Veeam Availability Suite is replacing four legacy IT solutions that could not guarantee reliable recovery or data protection. Veeam Availability Suite combines the industry-leading backup, restoration and replication capabilities of Veeam Backup & Replication with the advanced monitoring, reporting and capacity planning functionality of Veeam ONE. Because Veeam Availability Suite is integrated into the global supply chain processes and systems of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), a Veeam Global Alliance Partner, the solution was easily integrated with HPE storage solution (3PAR StoreServ and StoreOnce) to which UNLV transitioned.

“When we look at the most prestigious universities in the country, it’s apparent that digital transformation is one of the keys to expanding research opportunities and attracting the finest minds,” said Danny Allan, Vice President of Product Strategy at Veeam. “Veeam is proud to support UNLV on its journey to become a Top Tier university, helping them complete their digital transformation journey and ensuring its data and critical applications remain available at all times.”

“Veeam is a game-changer for us,” Nicpon added. “This is the first time we’ve been able to standardize and simplify data management. We’ve reached a level of flexibility we’ve never had before, and we can respond to the needs of the university faster than ever.”
