Microsoft Windows Server backup key features

Capabilities backup

Reliable Windows Server backup

Ensure timely and reliable backups for Microsoft Windows servers with many flexible configurations, without all the complexity.

  • Reduce production impact from scale by combining Changed Block Tracking (CBT) with Block-Level Incremental Backup (BLIB), parallel disk processing and Storage Snapshot integrations. This ensures you have the performance and security you need to process server-extensive data sets.
  • Remain safe from cyberthreats by taking full advantage of immutable, direct-to-object storage backups that naturally scale with your needs.
  • Stay agile and highly available without sacrificing your data protection with flexible recovery that ranges from bare-metal applications to granular objects and files.

Endpoints, especially those in home and remote offices, are vulnerable to accidental deletion of data, ransomware attacks and device damage or corruption. Send endpoint backups direct to the cloud to ensure employee productivity.

  • Target a cloud repository using Veeam Cloud Connect to securely send backups off-site, customizing retention to meet your organization’s needs.
  • Configure backup to the cloud, cache on premises, resume paused backups and other flexible options to confidently protect your endpoints.
  • Leverage remote discovery, deployment and policy configuration with Backup as a Service powered by Veeam Service Provider Console.

Windows Server Backup things to know

What are the three types of Windows backup?
  • Full backup is precisely what it sounds like: a complete server backup that includes everything needed to restore your server fully to a functioning state. This type of backup will typically require the most amount of space. Some products, like Veeam Backup & Replication, offer synthetic full backup that can significantly reduce the size needed to store a full backup.
  • Incremental backup is a supporting backup type that can NOT be used independently and requires at least one previous backup. When an incremental backup is initiated, the job will compare the last backup to the current server's state. It will then only process what has changed since the previous backup. An incremental backup requires some form of Changed Block Tracking (CBT). Veeam Backup & Replication takes this one step further by developing a dedicated Veeam Changed Block Tracking Driver for Windows Servers, making the process more efficient and less time-consuming.
  • Differential backup is also a supporting backup type that relies on a full backup as its foundation for what has changed and needs to be processed. The key difference here is an incremental backup can be used in a backup chain and can use CBT to track changes even from a previous incremental. In contrast, a differential backup can only use the last full backup for its CBT data, resulting in a larger backup file size.
What is the Windows Server Backup feature?
Windows Server Backup is a feature Microsoft provides for its Windows Server operating systems, Server 2012 and Server 2016 essentials installed in the OS by default. In Server 2016 and newer versions, this changed; Windows Server Backup has become like many other features and relegated to the Add roles and Features wizard, which requires an administrator to run the installation wizard or install it via PowerShell in most cases. The silver lining here is Microsoft has left the feature as an option and it is up to you, the administrator, to decide if it is to be used or replaced with a purpose-built server backup solution. Microsoft has its server edition designed to provide a functional server operating system, and backup is NOT a top priority here, so you are left with a basic functioning Windows Server Backup solution that offers full image, volume, files and folders backup combined with basic recovery options.
How do I back up my server data?
You may use the aforementioned Windows Server Backup feature by installing and configuring the service within Windows to schedule multiple backups or a single backup. Many organizations have chosen to use a robust and reliable purpose-built product with advanced features for backup and recovery for the critical job of backing up essential server applications and data. Many use the same process of leveraging Microsoft’s Volume Shadow copies (VSS), but that is where the similarities stop. Veeam Backup & Replication offers you a plethora of backup and recovery options. You may choose from several backup methods, all while storing these backups on a Veeam storage-agnostic backup repository. Utilizing a secondary target or built-in Scale-out Backup Repository™ capabilities, you can easily abide by the industry-standard 3-2-1 Rule for backup.
How do I recover from my Windows Server Backup?
The well-prepared fully understand that backup is just half of it and not much help in a critical situation if you cannot recover the data. Windows Server Backup supplies you with the necessary capabilities to recover an entire server to bare metal, files, folders and some Microsoft Office applications. But is your opening gambit for recovery in a disaster situation worth the risk of data loss? Many would answer no, which is why Veeam Backup & Replication provides enhanced recovery options, like Instant VM Recovery® for speed and mobility, application-items restore with Veeam Explorers™ and the ability to restore to AWS and Azure directly. These features, with many others, offer the experience of entire data life cycle management.
