Veeam® Backup & Replication™ features a distributed architecture with backup repositories as a target location for backups. This helps to decrease the load of a backup server and speed up backup, restore and replication to remote locations over the network. A proper backup repository design is essential to succeed with any Veeam Backup & Replication project.
When designing a backup repository, an architect should evaluate such parameters as size and performance. Both values need to be carefully calculated, so that the overall backup repository configuration will be effective for the entire lifecycle of the underlying components. Calculating the size of a repository is quite easy, while estimating the required performance of a backup repository is a more complicated task.
This white paper will help you evaluate the performance of a backup repository and test it without any impact on your production environment. Veeam expert Luca Dell‘Oca has developed a testing methodology for you using an I/O generator and some custom I/O profiles. Although the suggested methodology might be not perfect, we do hope these simulations will allow you to make a good estimate.
