When most of us deploy a Hyper-V VM, we give thought to the location of the virtual disk file as it can make a big difference to the storage situation of a host. But did you know that Hyper-V VMs have a lot more than just the virtual disk file? Sure, the virtual disk file can get you in trouble if a lot of VMs are on a host and the C:\ drive fills up. But, the other files of the VM are very important as well. Let’s break down the anatomy of the Hyper-V file format.

Did you know that on Thursday February 26, Veeam Backup & Replication turns 7 years old! It was first previewed publically during VMworld Europe in 2008. Doesn’t that seem like so long ago? Veeam Backup & Replication was announced on February 26, 2008 and then generally available on March 3, 2008. We are now on v8 and 2015 will have some BIG THINGS coming, so get ready!

VeeamON continues through its second day combining both partners and customers for a day full of training, content and fun. Here’s a quick rundown of what happened on this busy day:

The morning started with the general session where all attendees had a great showcase of the entire Veeam offering. We heard from Veeam CEO Ratmir Timashev on his vision for the company and the markets we serve from both the customer and partner perspectives.

To back up, or not to back up? That is the question. What do you back up on your Hyper-V hosts, if anything? This came to me from a discussion on Spiceworks recently. The original topic was a different matter, but the challenge I raised was that the Hyper-V host itself doesn’t need to be backed up, if you do Hyper-V well. As an important side note, definitely back up the VMs! You can use Veeam for that, it just works!
