What is Veeam Backup Essentials?

What’s new in Veeam Backup Essentials?
This latest release of Veeam Backup Essentials allows customers to manage and protect ALL workloads — virtual, physical and cloud — from a single Veeam pane of glass. How do I purchase Veeam Backup Essentials?
Customers  can purchase Veeam Backup Essentials in two-socket bundles for vSphere or Hyper-V environments with a maximum of six CPU sockets. To purchase, contact your preferred reseller, find a Veeam reseller in your area or place an inquiry with Veeam Sales.
Is there a limit to the number of two-socket bundles of Veeam Backup Essentials I can purchase?

Organizations may purchase up to three two-socket bundles for a total of six CPU sockets of Veeam Backup Essentials.

Veeam defines an organization as:

A company or any affiliates of the company, whether a separate legal entity or not, which is or becomes owned or controlled directly or indirectly, or is under common control with the company or its successor entity as to more than fifty (50) per cent of such company’s issued equity share capital, voting rights and/or the like. Organizations can span geographic locations, lines of business, domains and other organizational characteristics.

Examples of companies considered to be single organizations include:

  • A technology company with multiple international R&D sites
  • A firm with multiple business units selling unrelated products, brands or services (e.g., Proctor & Gamble and its Pantene, Pampers and other brands)
  • A business that operates under multiple domain names (e.g., the Acme mail-order company with its acme.com, acme.ca and acme.uk email domains).
Does Veeam Backup Essentials for VMware require VMware vSphere Essentials?
No, but it does require a VMware vSphere license with unlocked vStorage APIs and vAAI features (at least VMware vSphere Essentials).
Is the price for Veeam Backup Essentials for Hyper-V the same price as Veeam Backup Essentials for VMware?
Yes. Veeam maintains price parity across hypervisors, which also facilitates swapping bundles of Veeam Backup Essentials between hypervisors.
What if my virtual environment includes both vSphere and Hyper-V?
Organizations can purchase two-socket bundles for any mix of hypervisors. For example, an organization may purchase one two-socket bundle of Veeam Backup Essentials for Hyper-V and two two-socket bundles of Veeam Backup Essentials for VMware. An organization may also swap licenses between hypervisors (on a two-socket basis), should it change hypervisor platforms at some future time.
NOTE: Licenses purchased through the online store are not eligible for swapping between hypervisor platforms.
How do I know whether I’m eligible to purchase additional bundles of Veeam Backup Essentials?
You can open a licensing case at the Veeam Customer Portal. If you have reached your purchase limit for Veeam Backup Essentials, Veeam makes it easy for you to upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite™, which supports virtual environments of any size.

Licensing

General Veeam licensing information, including licensing criteria and terminology, can be viewed here.
How is Veeam Backup Essentials licensed?

Licenses for Veeam Backup Essentials are purchased on a perpetual basis with basic or production maintenance or a subscription license, which includes 24x7 production support.

Veeam Backup Essentials is licensed in two-socket bundles on hosts with VMs to be backed up, replicated, monitored or reported on. A license is required for each motherboard socket as reported by the hypervisor API.
NOTE: Target hosts for replication and migration jobs do not need to be licensed.

Are any product components such as backup servers, proxies and repositories licensed separately?
No. Product components are not licensed separately. You can deploy as many of these components as you like while licensed to the correct number of sockets.
Can a customer have more than one edition in an environment?

No. Only one edition (Standard, Enterprise or Enterprise Plus) can be used in the same physical location. Furthermore, all licensed editions must be the same across multiple locations to manage them through one Veeam Enterprise Manager.

This requirement applies to all Veeam Backup & Replication deployments, including multi-hypervisor environments. For example, if you have five licenses for vSphere and five licenses for Hyper-V in a location, all 10 licenses must be either Standard, Enterprise or Enterprise Plus.

Current customers who wish to upgrade to Enterprise or Enterprise Plus must upgrade all current licenses to receive a merged license file.

Is there a single license file for Veeam Backup Essentials?
Yes. You get a single license file that you install, and that license file will contain two components: Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE.
Can I merge my Veeam Backup Essentials license with the licenses for my other Veeam products?
No. Veeam Backup Essentials provides special bundled pricing and the products cannot be unbundled and combined with individually licensed products.

Upgrades

What do I do when my virtual environment grows beyond six sockets?

You have two upgrade options: Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup & Replication. Both options are offered for the difference in price between the product you’re upgrading from (Veeam Backup Essentials) to the price of the product you’re upgrading to (either Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication).

It is recommended that organizations currently holding licenses for Veeam Backup Essentials and any individually licensed Veeam product contact a Veeam sales representative to discuss appropriate upgrade options.

What happens to my Veeam ONE license when I upgrade from Veeam Backup Essentials to Veeam Backup & Replication?
When you upgrade from Veeam Backup Essentials to Veeam Backup & Replication, your Veeam ONE license is invalidated, and you are no longer eligible for support or maintenance for Veeam ONE. You are required to sign and submit a Letter of Destruction for Veeam ONE and discontinue using it.
If I currently own Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication for three sockets or less, can I convert to Veeam Backup Essentials?
Yes. There are product-conversion SKUs available. These SKUs allow customers who have purchased Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication for three or less sockets to convert to the equivalent product edition of Veeam Backup Essentials with no Letter of Destruction is required. To request conversion to Veeam Backup Essentials, contact Veeam sales or your preferred ProPartner.
If I currently own Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam ONE, can I buy Veeam Backup Essentials?
Current Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam ONE customers are not allowed to purchase Veeam Backup Essentials. These customers should either upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite  or purchase additional licenses for the single products.
What additional licenses and installation details are required to manage Linux-based and Windows-based Agents from Veeam Backup Essentials?
Utilization of agent management functionality requires the installation of the redistributable package of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 2.1 or later and/or Veeam Agent for Linux v2 or later with Veeam Backup Essentials.

If my organization currently owns six Veeam Backup Essentials sockets or less, can I buy Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication licenses?
