The Business Challenge

As a leading hybrid cloud solution provider, Opti9 is dedicated to creating customized, next-generation solutions for the most complex infrastructures. These complex infrastructures belong to some of the largest organizations in the world, including healthcare providers, government organizations, financial institutions, multinational e-commerce companies and large enterprises. Despite their differences, each vertical faces the same challenge. If data isn’t available, they can’t run their businesses, comply with industry regulations or protect themselves from cybercrime.

Enterprises rely on Opti9 for business continuity, and Opti9 relies on Veeam to power their managed services that protect data, including off-site backups-as-a-service (BaaS), backups-as-a-service for Microsoft 365 and disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS).

“Veeam has helped us save the day several times for customers,” said Michael Ohayon, Chief Operating Officer at Opti9. “Our customers have faced serious and potentially dangerous situations, but Veeam has helped us protect their business and their brand.”

The Veeam Solution

Veeam keeps data available and Opti9 keeps it secure so enterprises can focus on their business, comply with industry regulations and remain protected against debilitating cyberattacks.

Opti9 takes complete ownership and accountability for the IT infrastructures of many of the largest healthcare organizations. This enables medical providers to concentrate on improving patient care while Opti9 mitigates their security risks. Veeam keeps that healthcare data available and Opti9 makes sure it’s protected and compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) regulations.

One of Opti9’s healthcare customers is a large pharmaceutical company. Microsoft 365 is critical to that company’s core operation, so when an employee accidentally deleted a SharePoint file 30 minutes before a presentation to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a clinical drug trial, Opti9 came to the rescue.

Veeam powers Opti9’s BaaS solution for Microsoft 365, which let Opti9 restore the SharePoint file in minutes. The presentation proceeded on schedule, and the FDA approved the clinical drug trial, sparing the company a lengthy and costly delay in business.

Opti9 restores data all the time, and some of those restores save customers from breaking laws and paying fines. Even government employers are not immune from these regulations. Federal and state laws require them to pay employees at regular, set times.

“The government’s on-premises payroll server failed on a Thursday afternoon, right before payroll needed to be processed for direct deposit into our employees’ bank accounts,” Ohayon said. “If they failed to process payroll by the end of the business day, they could have faced thousands of dollars in fines, not to mention very angry employees. We restored the server from our cloud within minutes, and payroll was processed on time.

Opti9 also helps governments protect against cybercrime. The rise in ransomware attacks on government agencies have put everyone on high alert. Veeam-powered DRaaS helps protect data from being stolen and ransomed.

U.S. governments aren’t the only entities safeguarding the digital privacy and security of their citizens. In the European Union, personal data custody for an individual is a fundamental right, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) protects that right. Opti9’s e-commerce customers sell merchandise globally and Opti9 helps them maintain compliance with GDPR and the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) in the U.S. as these sales are made. If e-commerce companies fail to maintain compliance, they risk massive fines.

Opti9 also protects organizations’ data for Modern Data Protection, which helps them understand their customers better, accelerate business innovation and reduce costs.

“Enterprises can’t leverage their data for business growth unless they can rely on it, and that’s where Veeam is key,” Ohayon said. “Veeam helps us ensure that the data is always available.”

Ohayon said another key feature of Veeam is scalability.

“Veeam helps us protect petabytes of data on several thousand virtual machines (VMs) and those numbers will increase significantly as our customers’ data grows,” he said. “We’re thankful to have Veeam on our side.”

The Results

Opti9 and Veeam help healthcare providers comply with HIPAA-HITECH and helps all global enterprises comply with PCI DSS and GDPR. Maintaining industry compliance is one way to protect personal data. Another way is to avoid the pitfalls of cybercrime.
  • Protects enterprises and governments from the ravages of ransomware.
Veeam powers Opti9’s disaster recovery (DR) solution so customers’ businesses and data can’t be held hostage.
  • Maintains continuous data availability for Modern Data Protection
“Data is invaluable to our customers,” Ohayon said. “It’s one of their greatest assets, and it’s essential to their operations. Company:

Opti9 is a leading hybrid cloud solutions provider with offices in Garden City, NY, Omaha, NE, Overland Park, KS, and St. Louis, MO, and a global network of data centers. Specializing in cloud services, application development and modernization, backup and disaster recovery, and managed security and compliance, Opti9’s solutions are designed to accelerate digital transformation with minimal business disruption so companies can realize the full benefits of the cloud faster. With its business-first focus, Opti9 blends experience with innovation and new solutions to deliver on its “Right Workload, Right Cloud, Right Time” approach.

Challenge:

Opti9 makes business resilience easy, even for multinational enterprises facing the most stringent data security and compliance requirements. One of these enterprises is a security contractor with offices in numerous countries. The backups and archival data needed to conform to strict sovereignty requirements and needed to remain in the country or region where the data originated. The backups also needed to comply with a range of regulations, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Staff Judge Advocates (SJAs), and the General Data Protection. Regulation (GDPR). After using Veeam for almost 10 years to house & secure customer data in its own data centers and on its own servers, Opti9 faced a new challenge. New and existing organizations such as this one now required a complete 2nd copy of their entire long-term data archive be stored at another facility in the same source country, without increasing their already budgeted costs.

Results:

  • Saves millions of dollars each year in archived backup storage costs
  • Supports data security and compliance with SOX, ITAR, SJAs and GDPR
  • Helps protect against ransomware by keeping the data offline and encrypted with a unique key
