Business Opportunity

New Zealand has one of the highest penetrations of server virtualisation in the world. Business Technology Group (BTG) plays a significant role in advancing virtualisation nationwide by deploying and managing hundreds of virtual environments for its clients.

According to Duncan Dwight, National Sales Manager for BTG, it’s becoming more and more unusual to find organisations that have not virtualised their IT infrastructures. However, it’s not unusual to find organisations that are frustrated with their backup and recovery tools.

“People are well-aware of the benefits of virtualisation, but their companies haven’t experienced those benefits because their legacy backup tools weren’t designed to make the most of virtualisation,” Dwight explained. “This opens up two business opportunities for BTG. The first opportunity is to deliver those benefits and convert those people into happy, satisfied clients. The second opportunity is to build our managed services business. Organisations that virtualised several years ago will eventually need infrastructure upgrades. Some will upgrade, and others will move their infrastructures to the cloud to save time and money. This is our chance to demonstrate the benefits of our managed services in the cloud.”

Challenge

When the virtualisation market was in its infancy, BTG chose Veeam® Backup & Replication™ to back up and recover its internal virtual machines (VMs) and to provide data protection and DR in clients’ virtualisation deployments.

“Our reason for choosing Veeam years ago was simple: it’s a fast and reliable solution that does what it promises to do,” Dwight said. “The question was would Veeam continue to stay ahead of its competitors and offer features that leveraged virtualisation? And would Veeam scale as our managed services business grew and the number of hosted VMs increased?”

Solutions

Veeam Backup & Replication continues to meet BTG’s business needs. It protects the company’s internal VMs, clients’ on-premise VMs and the growing number of hosted VMs. Veeam is a powerful, easy-to-use and affordable solution designed specifically for virtualisation that provides backup and recovery for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. Dwight said Veeam solves the two main issues that frustrate BTG clients—their legacy tools can’t provide fast, frequent backup to meet recovery point objectives (RPOS), and they can’t recover VMs, files and items quickly enough to meet recovery time objectives (RTOs).

“We’ve taken away clients’ pain by reducing their backup and recovery times by about 80% with Veeam,” Dwight explained. “Backup windows have shrunk considerably and recovery time has improved from days to minutes. Veeam also comes to the rescue of clients who experienced complete VM failure or a problem with their VMs running email.”

Veeam Backup & Replication enables instant recovery of a failed VM from a backup. Veeam also provides fast granular recovery for any virtualised operating system and application, such as Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and SQL, which Dwight said are often the last applications that his clients virtualise.

“All it takes is showing Veeam in action, and people who are frustrated with their legacy backup tools are sold,” Dwight said. “We have two types of clients: Those who have Veeam Backup & Replication and those who are going to get it.”

While Veeam Backup & Replications delivers the benefits of virtualisation to clients, Veeam Software delivers the benefits of being a valued channel partner to BTG.

“One of the reasons for our success in the virtualisation market is the great support we receive from Veeam’s staff,” Dwight said. “The Veeam team in Sydney is a step ahead of everyone else in the industry because of its outstanding sales, marketing and technical support. Veeam Backup & Replication also has critical mass behind it and is a wellrespected brand—it’s a solution that sells itself.”.

Benefits

Helps clients meet RPOs and RTOs
Veeam Backup & Replication solves BTG’s clients’ two main problems: their legacy tools can’t provide fast, frequent backup to meet RPOs and can’t recover VMs, files and items quickly enough to meet RTOs. With Veeam, clients back up all VMs at least once or twice a day to meet RPOs, and they recover virtualised data and applications in minutes to meet RTOs.

Reduces clients’ backup and recovery times by 80%
With Veeam Backup & Replication, clients’ backup windows have shrunk considerably and recovery time has improved from days to minutes. Veeam also provides peace of mind to clients who virtualise Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and SQL because they can recover individual items in minutes.

Supports growing client list and managed services business
More than 90% of BTG’s clients use Veeam Backup & Replication to realise the benefits of virtualisation. Veeam is also the engine that powers fast backup and quick recovery for hosted VMs in BTG’s growing managed services business. Veeam scales with ease; it’s built to optimize performance in multi-hypervisor environments with thousands of VMs.
