Why You Will Change Your Primary Backup in 2023

Veeam is proud to release the findings of yet another research project, the 2023 Data Protection Trends Report, which is the industry’s largest independent research on backup and data protection. This research is fully independent, representing the whole market — not only Veeam customers — and was conducted by a third-party research organization, with no one knowing that Veeam was involved.

While it was always a myth that almost no one changes backup solutions, what we see from this year’s results is a surprisingly high likelihood that an organization would consider switching its primary backup solution in the next year. Keep in mind this is from 4,200 unbiased organizations from 28 countries.

If we remove the more neutral responses of “Somewhat unlikely” and “Somewhat likely,” we get a very pronounced opinion of the state of potential change in the backup landscape over the next twelve months.

Our most favorite question in all our research is: what would cause an organization to change its primary backup solution to a new solution or service? Here we ask the respondents to indicate which of the following would be a consideration in making a change, as well as the single most important change driver.

Improving the reliability/success of backup is the most selected option of the ‘choose all’ considerations, as well as being the top single, most important driver for making a change in the primary backup solution to a new solution of service. This is understandable in that you cannot recover what has not been backed up. It also suggests that the current backup product(s) are viewed as being unreliable, and therefore top drivers for making a change.

Other interesting observations after noting the need for greater reliability include:
