Backup jobs stop working with NetApp SteelStore Cloud Integrated storage after upgrading to Veeam version 9

Challenge

Aafter upgrading Veeam Backup & Replication to version 9, backup jobs to a NetApp repository based on a SteelStore host platform fail. The following error message can be seen in the job logs:
“Error    File not found. File name: \\PathToShare\BackupFolder\JobName.vbm”

The NetApp log containts the following error:
“rename not allowed between pinned share and unpinned share, source = /fs/PathToShare/BackupFolder/JobName.vbm_1_tmp destination = /fs/PathToShare/BackupFolder/JobName.vbm”

Cause

The .vbm file contains backup chain metadata, so this file has to be updated during every job run. To prevent possible metadata corruption, the update is divided in two steps: saving content to .vbm_tmp and renaming vbm_tmp to .vbm. Such renaming is not allowed on the SteelStore repository due to a NetApp limitation. This limitation only applies to SteelStore versions older than 3.3. Veeam Backup & Replication version 9 is officially supported by NetApp starting with SteelStore 3.3.

Solution

Upgrade SteelStore to version 3.3. If this is not possible, you can select a different repository for your backup jobs or continue to use Veeam Backup & Replication version 8.
