I arrived in Austin Texas in the late afternoon just before sunset and checked into the Embassy Suites just across Lady Bird Lake (which looked a lot like a river to me) from the Austin Convention Center. The sun was setting behind me as I walked towards the Congress Avenue bridge that lead across the river/lake to the convention center. Imagine my surprise to find thousands of people lining the south side of the bridge. A musty odor that I couldn’t quite place, but was certainly familiar, filled the air. Had all of these people forgotten to shower? Had I? Then it hit me. Bats! The smell was bat guano, that putrid disgusting mix of urine and feces that only a bat can produce. The crowd came to life with an audible gasp and I looked on with them as 1.5 million Mexican free tailed bats emerged en masse from under the bridge and formed a massive streaming black cloud across the sky. Surreal doesn’t do it justice. No wonder Bruce Wayne was afraid of bats. I might have a little bit of a problem with them now too!
The Veeam Team was onsite talking about Veeam Backup & Replication v7 and the Veeam Management Pack. We had lots of questions regarding Instant VM Recovery, Instant File Level Recovery, and working with both VMware and Hyper-V. Joe Gremillion had his demo station up and running and the attendees loved it! Joe did several deep dive demonstrations. (Yes, that is a Dinosaur in the background!) You just never know what you are going to see at SpiceWorld. Veeam sponsored one of the more popular activities at the conference in the form of a free massage “ZEN Zone.” The attendees kept 4 masseuses going full time for 2 whole days. As one beneficiary told me “Veeam is keeping me relaxed here and at my office!”
One of the best things about SpiceWorld is that the whole conference is all about the community and the customer. While we were there in Austin we spent some time producing a video with some of our amazing customers. If you haven’t watched it yet it’s time to click the link below!
As the sun set on the SpiceWorld conference I walked back across the north side of the Congress bridge (avoiding the crowds, while holding my nose) and tried to ignore the growing cloud of bats making their way into the city. SPICY!
