Related User Guide Page

This article provides information about settings that must be changed on the HyperFlex data platform controllers to allow the Direct NFS transport mode to function.

For more context, please refer to the Backup from Cisco HyperFlex Snapshots > Integration Modes user guide page to understand the specific circumstances in which the actions described in this article should be taken.

Purpose

This article describes how to configure the Cisco HyperFlex Controller's Firewall to allow Veeam Backup & Replication access the HyperFlex storage for use with DirectNFS transport mode.

This is an alternative option to the Cisco HyperFlex Integration which allows for backup from Cisco HyperFlex snapshots.

Solution

These configuration changes only need to be made when the Cisco HyperFlex System is not added to the Veeam Storage Infrastructure, and DirectNFS with standard VMware snapshot processing will be used.

Veeam recommends using the HyperFlex Integration with Backup from Cisco HyperFlex Snapshots instead of DirectNFS when possible.

Summary

VMware vSphere Virtual Machines (VMs) hosted on Cisco HyperFlex use dedicated Cisco HyperFlex HX Data Platform controllers to access the storage. These controllers are deployed as virtual machines on the same VMware ESXi host as the VMs. By default, the controllers are configured to receive traffic only from the ESXi host where they are located. To enable communication between Veeam Backup & Replication and the Cisco HyperFlex storage system, you will need to manually add the IP addresses of the Veeam Backup Server and VMware Backup Proxies to the data platform controllers.

Procedure

  1. Connect to the Cisco HyperFlex Management Controller via SSH with the admin user.
  2. Use the following command to add the IP of the Veeam Backup Server and any related VMware Backup Proxies to the firewall whitelist:
stcli security whitelist add --ips <Veeam NFS Data IP>
  1. Use the following command to review the whitelist and ensure the correct IPs have been added:
stcli security whitelist list

More Information

Direct NFS Transport Mode Limitation

DirectNFS transport mode cannot be used to back up a VM if a VMware Snapshot or Cisco HyperFlex snapshot is present on that VM before backup. For more information, review: DirectNFS Transport Mode Limitations

This limitation does not occur when utilizing Backup from Cisco HyperFlex Snapshot.
