Hydrocarbons are extremely important to the Bolivian economy, providing some of the country’s exports, satisfying domestic consumption, and powering much of its electrical grid. State-owned YPFB Transporte S.A. is responsible for getting hydrocarbons from the country’s production fields to consumption centers in both domestic and international markets.
“We deliver a 24/7 service that’s strategically important to Bolivia, so we must minimize disruption and ensure data can be recovered,” said Oscar Iraola Orias, Head of Infrastructure at YPFB Transporte S.A. “As an organization, we’re increasingly data-driven, so we’re more and more focused on ensuring we never lose data and can always access it.”
As the organization’s data grew, its previous approach to data protection failed to deliver sufficient flexibility, immutability, performance and coverage. In particular, the YPFB Transporte S.A. IT team were concerned about the growing prevalence of cyberthreats.
“Like many companies, we started out with traditional data protection processes that relied on local backups and lots of manual effort,” said the team. “With new risks around every corner, it was time to modernize our approach. Our goal was to boost our level of protection while making our lives in the IT team easier.”
To keep hydrocarbons flowing to domestic and export markets round the clock, YPFB Transporte S.A. chose Veeam to protect its data. Before making its selection, the team carried out an exhaustive analysis of the market.
“Veeam outperformed the rest on ease of administration, simplicity of integration with our existing IT setup, and its advanced functionality,” said the team. “We like the fact that Veeam offers rock-solid data protection for both physical and virtual servers, which suits our hybrid environment.”
Working to a tight schedule, YPFB Transporte S.A. rolled out Veeam to enable enterprise resilience and recovery orchestration. The organization uses Veeam Data Platform Premium to protect its on-premises IT environment, plus Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 for its Microsoft 365 applications.
“Veeam was even simpler to deploy than we expected, and we kept within schedule and budget for the project,” said Oscar Iraola Orias. “The Veeam team is always on hand if we require support — they respond quickly and effectively to any query and help us get the best out of the solution.”
YPFB Transporte S.A. now backs up data more regularly and retains more copies with Veeam. When it comes to recovering data, the organization has gained more powerful, granular capabilities, supporting high levels of business continuity and recovery. The organization carries out regular testing to ensure that it maintains high levels of protection against emerging threats.
“YPFB Transporte S.A. delivers a 24/7 service,” said Oscar Iraola Orias. “So interruptions should be minimized. With Veeam, we cut recovery times by up to 50%, ensuring seamless operations. This makes a big difference to how smoothly our business can run in the event of an incident. Using the orchestration features included in Veeam Data Platform Premium, we’ve automated much of our disaster recovery processes so that they operate with very little input from our team.”
At the same time, YPFB Transporte S.A. is using Veeam to reduce the administrative burden on its IT team, freeing up resources for more valuable initiatives.
“Since deploying Veeam, we spend 40% less time and effort on manual tasks related to the backup process, and our capabilities have improved dramatically,” said Oscar Iraola Orias. “Our backups complete successfully more than 99% of the time and take half the time they did before, giving us confidence that we’re protected and have our data backed up if needed. Now we can dedicate more resources to digital transformation, cybersecurity and infrastructure optimization projects, which greatly benefits the company.”
