What does “Enterprise Backup” mean in 2022?

Enterprise organizations are big and complex, and their IT strategies are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the business. With assured access to data being increasingly important, enterprise data backup and recovery is a vital element for IT organizations to deliver in order to meet their objectives to the business. So, what is most important to organizations when considering their enterprise backup solution? The 2022 Data Protection Trends Report explored that question and produced interesting insights from the 3,000+ enterprises (> 1,000 employees) across 28 countries.

Enterprise = Heterogeneous

The research shows that enterprise backup has the daunting requirement of  protecting modern/cloud-hosted workloads, enterprise applications and traditional data center platforms. That speaks to the general makeup of enterprise IT organizations today as being hybrid, multi-cloud environments. In fact, the “new normal” for modern IT is approximately 50/50 between on-premises servers and cloud-hosted servers, as discussed in last week’s blog —  and every data protection strategy must accommodate physical, virtual and multiple cloud-hosted options.

Solving for geographic complexity is a key consideration as well

In most situations, the bigger the enterprise, the more locations and satellite IT environments there are to manage. It’s no surprise that the ability to manage across multiple locations and geographies is also a top-ranking key consideration for Modern Data Protection. It is important to distinguish between “sprawl” and “scale.” While 46% of respondents equated Enterprise Backup as “Easy to manage across multiple locations/geographies” (and 12% said it was the most important aspect of their next purchase), only 38% regarded “scales to 1,000s or 10,000s of protected devices” in the same way (and only 7% deemed it most important).
