Challenge

Cisco HyperFlex VM Snapshot creation process will stop VMs if a Veeam CDP storage policy filter is present. Affected VMs will not boot anymore.

Cause

Each time a Cisco HyperFlex Snapshot is created when a Veeam CDP storage policy filter is present, the HyperFlex snapshot creation process will change the ddb.sidecars entry within the vmdk metadata file so that it references a non-existent vmfd file.

Solution

Upgrade Cisco HX to prevent this from occuring
Veeam RnD has confirmed that this issue is resolved in Cisco HX 4.5(2a) when used with vSphere 7.0 U2.
Updating will prevent this issue from occurring but does not resolve it if it has happened.
  1. Make sure that the VM is powered off.
  2. Go to the Files view in Backup & Replication and browse to the base folder of the VM.
  3. Select the <vmname>.vmdk file and right-click “edit”
  4. Go to the ddb.sidecars entry and correct the vmfd filename so that it points to the existing file within the same folder.
  5. Save the file and close the editor
  6. Power On the VM
Example

VM Name: Sample
vmdf File on disk: Sample-c9c24ae00ec07941.vmfd

Sample.vmdk contains the entry:

    ddb.sidecars = "veecdp_1,Sample_675617-62e8e8ccb585c028.vmfd"

This corrected entry is:

    ddb.sidecars = "veecdp_1,Sample-c9c24ae00ec07941.vmfd"
