Purpose

This article was designed to complement the information in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide regarding Azure Blob Storage, specifically storage and container creation. This article describes the correct options that must be selected when configuring an Azure Storage Account to leverage the Veeam Backup & Replication Azure Immutability feature, available starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 12.

Solution

Immutability Requires a New Storage Account Container

Immutability can only be used with new storage account containers and cannot be used with existing backup data where immutability was not applied previously.

If you need to migrate your data from a non-immutable bucket to an immutable bucket, perform the steps described in the migrating data between different cloud providers scenario documented in the User Guide: Migrating Data To Another Capacity Tier

Make sure that the Azure Blob storage settings meet the following requirements:

  • When configuring the storage account:
    • Enable Versioning for blobs
    • Disable Version-level immutability support
    • Disable Soft-delete for blobs.
    • Do not enable any life-cycle rules
    • Do not enable the default immutability policy later.

  • When creating the individual container inside:
    • Enable version-level immutability at the container level:

More Information

Immutability will make your data impossible to delete aside from the termination of the associated Azure subscription due to failure to pay. If you fail to pay your bill and your account has an active time-based retention policy in effect, normal data retention policies will apply as stipulated in the terms and conditions of your contract with Microsoft.
