This whitepaper has been designed for Indonesian organisations and explains how they can strategise and act to shore up defences against increasingly serious ransomware attacks, as the country is expected to beef up regulations after a high-profile incident this year.
In June 2024, the Indonesian government was hit by a major ransomware attack that affected more than 160 agencies. A group of attackers, called Brain Cipher, initially locked up the data and demanded US$8 million in ransom but later released the decryption key, saying it was doing so freely. In July, at the time of writing of this whitepaper, the government was still recovering services, and President Joko Widodo had ordered an audit of government data centres for vulnerabilities.
This whitepaper includes guidance for government agencies on how to best protect against various cyber threats, with a focus on the implications of existing regulations as well as a possible upcoming Cybersecurity Bill that could be passed.
By developing the right capabilities and practices, government and private organisations significantly strengthen their security posture around data protection and disaster recovery (DR), and greatly reduce attack vectors from both internal and external threats.
