Multi-subnet SQL AlwaysOn clusters are not supported for hosting the Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager configuration databases.

Purpose

This article provides information on using a SQL AlwaysOn Availability Group to host the Veeam Backup & Replication and/or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager configuration database(s).

Solution

Configuration Notes

  • It is best practice to keep the Veeam Backup & Replication application and its configuration database on the same server to maintain the lowest latency and highest performance.[1]
  • The included SQL Express instance is considered adequate for protecting up to 500 machines.[2]
  • The best way to protect the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database is to use the built-in Configuration Backup.
  • Hosting the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database on a remote SQL Instance may negatively impact the performance of the Veeam Backup & Replication software. The Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database is highly transactional, and network congestion could delay communication with the configuration database.
  • Please be advised that SQL AlwaysOn Availability Groups require the databases to be in Full Recovery mode. Veeam Backup and Replication does not currently truncate its database, as we expect it to be in simple recovery mode. This will require you to manually truncate the SQL log file to ensure it doesn't grow too large.

Hosting Veeam Database on SQL AlwaysOn Availability Group

This information applies to both Veeam Backup & Replication and Enterprise Manager.

The following deployment advice assumes:

  • If the Veeam Server is on the Domain:
    • The SQL AlwaysOn Availability group uses Windows Authentication
    • A domain service account has been created and assigned the required permissions in the remote SQL Instance.
  • If the Veeam Server is not on a Domain
    • The SQL AlwaysOn Availability Group has been configured to use SQL Authentication.
    • A SQL Authentication account has been created and assigned the required permissions in the remote SQL Instance.

  1. During the Install process, select the option "Let me specify different settings."
Specify Settings
  1. If the Veeam Server is on the domain, on the Service Account page of the Install wizard, specify the AD Service account that will be used to run the local Veeam services and connect to the SQL AOAG.

If the Veeam Server is not on the domain, leave as the default "LOCAL SYSTEM account"
Service Account Settings
  1. On the SQL Server Instance page of the Install wizard, specify the Availability Group Listener.
SQL Server Instance
  1. If the Veeam Server is not on the domain, on the SQL Server Instance page of the install wizard, specify the SQL Authentication account details.
  2. Proceed with the installation of the Veeam software.
  3. After the installation has been completed, connect to SQL AOAG and add the Veeam configuration database to the Availability Databases.
