Challenge

When a Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV backup job fails unexpectedly, or the backup proxy appliance is powered off for some reason (manual power-off, hypervisor host crash, or any unexpected failure), you may get the volume groups (created for backup purposes) left in Prism Element and not removed from your cluster.

Cause

Volume groups created by the backup proxy appliance are temporary and used only during the backup job run. In case of any unexpected job or proxy failure, they are not removed from the cluster correctly.

Solution

It is safe to manually remove the temporary volume groups left over from previous job runs. The next job run will create a new volume group.

Follow the next steps to remove the groups when no backup jobs are running:

  1. Within Prism Element, locate the volume group with “Veeam-“ in its name.
In Prism Element, the "Volume Group" tab is open, showing a list of volume groups. A volume group named "Veeam-5c21c6e0-cc4a-4f97-ab27-e63ace0f7c04" is highlighted, indicating it was created by a Veeam backup job.
  1. Update the volume group options and untick ‘Client IQN/Address’ checkbox:
The "Update Volume Group" dialog in Prism Element is displayed. The client IQN/address checkbox is ticked under "Client" settings, showing an attached client. The "Save" button is visible, and no VMs are currently attached to the volume group.
Otherwise, you will get the following error:
An error message in Prism Element reads "Operation failed: VG has one or more attachments." This occurs when attempting to remove a volume group that still has client attachments.
  1. Save the volume group configuration and run the remove operation.
