Purpose

This article documents two methods to migrate Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV backup files to a different Veeam Backup & Replication Repository.

Solution

Semi-Automated Method

This method utilizes the Copy Backup feature, introduced in Veeam Backup & Replication 12, to simplify the process and allows the entire procedure to be performed directly from within the Veeam Backup & Replication Console.

Before You Begin
Procedure

In this procedure, "OldRepo" refers to the current location of the backup files for the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV job and "NewRepo" refers to the repository where you want the backup files to reside.

  1. Using the Copy Backup feature, copy the backup files to the NewRepo.
  2. Edit the job, and configure it to use the NewRepo.
  3. Run the job once.
  4. Confirm that the repository switch has occurred.
Within the Veeam Backup & Replication Console, check the Repository column in these views to confirm:
    1. The backup files on the NewRepo appear under Backups > Disk.
    2. The backup files on the OldRepo appear under Backups -> Disk (Orphaned).
  5. After confirming that the job is now utilizing the backup files that were copied to the NewRepo, delete the old backup files on the OldRepo.

Manual Method

This method works for all versions of Veeam Backup & Replication and was original concieved of prior to the Copy Backup feature introduced in Veeam Backup & Replication 12. This method requires you manually move the backup files from one location to another.

Before You Begin
  • This process only works when moving backup files between Repositories of the same Veeam Backup & Replication server.
  • Ensure that the job whose backup files you are moving is not running and will not run during the entire migration process.

Procedure

  1. Locate the backup chain. In the Veeam Backup & Replication console navigate to [Backups]->[Disk], right-click the entry and select open backup properties, take note of the path to the backup files.

    Example: E:\Backups\
Initial Location
  1. Navigate to the repository path via File Explorer and locate the backups within the job to move.
  2. Move the backups to the new location.

    Example: F:\Backups\
  3. Rescan both the original repository and new repository.
  4. If the backup files are not encrypted, skip this step.
If the backup files are encrypted, they will appear under the Backups > Disk (Encrypted) node. Right-click the backup and select Specify password. Then enter the password to decrypt the backup files. More Information
Decrypt backups
  1. The moved backup chain will appear under the Backup -> Disk (imported) section.
After import
  1. Connect to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV web interface and edit the backup policy whose backup files you moved and direct it to the new repository.
  2. After the next run of that job, the moved backup chains will shift from the Backups > Disk (imported) section to Backups > Disk. The backup policy will use the new location as a target repository.
After job run
