How to enable "Restore to Azure" Generation 2 VM Support

Feature Change in Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1 and higher
Starting in Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1, the setting AzureEnableGeneration2VMRestore is now hard-coded to true. This change enables the restore to Microsoft Azure to generate Generation 2 VMs by default.

Purpose

This article documents details about enabling the restore of Azure VMs with Generation 2 in Veeam Backup & Replication version 11, 11a, and 12.0.

Solution

Requirements and Limitations for Generation 2 VM Support
To learn Generation 2 VM support limitations, see Limitations for Restore to Microsoft Azure.

In Veeam Backup & Replication versions 11 through 12.0, experimental support for restoring to Microsoft Azure as generation 2 VMs is available.

To enable Generation 2 VM support in those versions, add the following value to the registry of the server where the Veeam Backup & Replication Console is run:

Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
Value Name: AzureEnableGeneration2VMRestore
Value Type: DWORD (32-bit) Value
Value Data: 1

Once in place, restart the Veeam Backup Service.
