SharePoint Sites May Not Be Displayed When Browsing Backups

Challenge

When browsing backups or backup copies, SharePoint root sites and their subsites may not be visible.

Cause

If a backed-up SharePoint subsite is moved between repositories using the Move-VBOEntityData cmdlet, or removed from a repository using the Remove-VBOEntityData cmdlet, the metadata for the entire parent root site hierarchy may be unintentionally removed. This can result in missing historical restore points for related backed-up subsites, although the site content itself remains available in the repositories.

This issue occurs only under the following conditions:

  • A subsite is moved from a Jet-based repository using the Move-VBOEntityData PowerShell cmdlet, or a subsite is removed from either a Jet-based or object storage repository using the Remove-VBOEntityData PowerShell cmdlet.
  • Only SharePoint backups are affected.

The issue can occur in any version of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

Solution

  1. Upgraded Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to build 8.1.2.180 or later.
  2. Identify jobs containing SharePoint subsites moved or removed using PowerShell, as described in the Cause section.
  3. Use the Start-VBOJob cmdlet as shown below to run a full synchronization for each job containing impacted SharePoint sites.
    During the full backup run, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 will automatically repair the issue in the latest new restore points for impacted objects that are still present within the production Microsoft 365 environment.

$job = Get-VBOJob -Name "Backup Job Name"
Start-VBOJob -Job $job -Full:$true
Note: To browse all content of the impacted sites, use the “Show items that have been deleted by user” and “Show all versions of items that have been modified by user” options.
