Purpose

This article documents how to force a backup or backup copy job to start a new backup chain by disconnecting the existing restore points from the job.

Solution

Please ensure that the destination repository will have sufficient space to start a new backup set.

Veeam Backup & Replication 12 and higher

Starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 12, a new Detach from job option was added, which should be used instead of the old Remove from configuration option.

For Backup Jobs
  1. Disable the Backup Job
  2. Detach Backups from Job
  3. Run the job, and a new backup set will be started.

For Backup Copy Jobs
  1. Disable the Backup Copy Job
  2. Detach Backups from Job
  3. Enable the Backup Copy Job
  4. Start the Backup Copy Job, and a new backup set will be started.

The detached backup files remain in the backup repository and also in the Veeam Backup & Replication console. Veeam Backup & Replication shows the detached backups in the inventory pane in the node with the (Orphaned) postfix. If the detached backups belonged to the job with daily retention, the background retention process retains the backups according to the configured retention and deletes the backups from the repository after the retention period ends. If the retention period is set in restore points, the background retention process does not delete the backups. You need to delete them manually. For more information on how to delete backups manually, see Deleting Backups from Disk.

Veeam Backup & Replication 11a and lower

  1. Removing Backups from Configuration
Note: If the Backup Set being removed is for a Backup Copy job, make sure to Disable the Backup Copy job first. If this is not done, the "Remove from configuration" option will be greyed out and unavailable.
  2. Run the job, and a new backup set will be started.

Important Notes about Remove from Configuration:

  • The files that are removed from configuration will no longer be controlled by the job's retention policy. They will remain on disk where they were left until they are manually removed.
  • There may be multiple entries under Backups>Imported for the files that were removed from backups previously then were brought back in after a rescan of the repository.
  • For Backup Copy Jobs with Archival fulls enabled - Make sure to check the box to remove archived fulls when removing from configuration. Otherwise a new incremental from the most recent archived restore point will be created.
