How to Configure HTTP Proxy for Linux-based Veeam Components

Purpose

This article documents how to configure HTTP and HTTPS Proxy settings for Linux-based components, including the Veeam Software Appliance and JeOS-deployed Veeam Infrastructure Appliances, in environments that require a proxy to access the internet.

Note: For proxy configuration settings for Windows-based components, please review KB4875.

Solution

For Veeam Software Appliance and Veeam Infrastructure Appliances built with JeOS

This procedure is documented in the user guide:
User Guide > Configuring Veeam Appliances > Configuring Network Settings > Configuring HTTP/HTTPS Proxies

Note: The HTTP proxy settings on the Veeam Software Appliance are not propagated to the Veeam Infrastructure Appliances. Each appliance must be configured individually.

  1. Log in to the TUI (Terminal UI).
  2. In the main menu, select Host Configuration.
The Veeam Host Management console displays the main configuration menu with "Host configuration" highlighted. The right panel prompts the user to press Enter to modify settings. Other available options include remote access configuration, password change, reboot, sign out, and shutdown.
  1. In the next menu, select HTTP proxy.
The Veeam Host Management console is open to a configuration menu with "HTTP proxy" highlighted. The right panel shows the current proxy configuration, with all proxy settings ("HTTP proxy," "HTTPS proxy," and "No proxy") listed as "not set."
  1. In the Proxy settings dialog box that appears, toggle the Enable proxy setting.
  2. Enter the HTTP(S) information.
  3. After you configure a proxy, you can use the Bypass field to specify destinations that the appliance can connect to directly. You can specify the following types of destinations:
    • Specific hostnames such as server1 or server1.domain.test
    • Specific IP addresses such as 172.21.241.5
    When specifying multiple addresses and hostnames, each one must be separated by a comma. For example: 
    172.21.241.5,server1.domain.test,server1
The Veeam Host Management console displays a "Proxy settings" dialog. Fields for HTTP(s) proxy is shown, and set to port 3128, along with a field for exceptions ("Bypass"). OK and Cancel buttons are at the bottom.

For User-Built Linux-based Veeam Component Machines

  • The Veeam packages deployed on Linux utilize the file /etc/veeam-environment for their HTTP and HTTPS proxy settings, instead of the OS-default file, /etc/environment. When using a JeOS-deployed Veeam Infrastructure Appliance, the TUI manages the configuration file, as shown here:
A terminal window shows the command cat /etc/veeam-environment run on a Linux host. The displayed file contains proxy configuration lines generated by Veeam Host Management, specifying both https_proxy and http_proxy as http://10.0.0.1:3128.
  • For Linux machines not deployed using the JeOS appliance ISO, the /etc/veeam-environment file must be manually created and configured.
  • Optionally, if the /etc/environment file has already been set, and you want Veeam to use the same proxy settings as the OS, you can choose to create a symlink instead (sudo ln -s /etc/environment /etc/veeam-environment).
