Frequently Asked Questions

Veeam licensing (all products)

Veeam® licenses software in a variety of ways depending on the specific product and / or use case you are interested in. This includes licensing by the number of CPU sockets on a managed server (or host), as well as by the number of instances. Some products may license by VM, physical server, workstation or cloud instances and / or users being managed. Veeam offers instance licensing that enables portability across various products and workloads or Perpetual licensing for socket-based implementations.

Instance licensing FAQs

Why is Veeam using a new licensing model called Instance licensing?

As the market shifts more increasingly to multi-cloud and hybrid environments, which is based on the foundation of portability, subscription-type licensing is becoming the expectation. Veeam has made the commitment to customers to offer more and more products via a subscription model. The benefits of this model for customers include:

  • Time-value of money: Lower upfront cost, changing capex to opex.
  • Portability: Leverage portable Subscription licenses interchangeably for the workloads you need.
  • Price predictability: Purchase multi-year contracts to lock in pricing by paying upfront or pay as you go.
  • Pay for use: Buy only what you need today and increase / decrease based on need at the time of renewal.
  • No lock in: If you're not satisfied, you may choose not to renew your subscription.
  • Support included: Get 24.7.365 Production Support for the entire term of your license at no extra cost.
What is Veeam’s new Instance licensing model?

Veeam’s new Instance licensing model is brand new and provides users with an added element of PORTABILITY, making the jump to cloud and hybrid environments even easier without additional fees.

Instance licenses are sold for a defined duration and can be used across a variety of Veeam products and across a variety of workload types interchangeably. Instance licensing offers all of the benefits of a traditional Subscription-style license, such as starting small, no lock-in, pay for what you use and adopting a cloud-friendly opex budgeting model.

But there are many more benefits to Instance licensing that separate it from traditional subscriptions. You no longer have to purchase licenses “by product” OR “by specific workload type”, such as VM, server, workstation or cloud VM. This new model makes a variety of products available easily. That’s right: Instance licenses can be used across multiple products and workload types, so you aren’t tied to a license-type or product that you don’t need. We call that PORTABILITY!

Use what you want, when you need it. This license portability also simplifies ordering and license management, reducing the complexity of managing various SKUs by product or workload type.

How do I purchase Instance licenses, and what are the terms?

You purchase Instance licenses in bundles of 10 instances. You select whether you want monitoring or not, then select your edition. It’s just two simple steps.

With one- to five-year Instance license options, you can choose the term and payment schedule that meets your needs. Pay upfront or pay annually. When the license expires, you must renew the license to continue usage of the subscription. Each Instance license will include 24.7.365 Production Support.

What can Veeam’s NEW portable Subscription licensing be used for?

Veeam’s new Subscription license model can be used for a variety of uses today, and the list is growing. Effectively, the subscription model can be used for most workload types, including VMs and cloud-based VMs, physical servers and workstations, and enterprise application plugins. The Subscription licensing is not licensed on a “per-socket” basis, but can be used for on-premises as well as cloud and hybrid deployments. The list below shows the type of workloads that are available with the new Subscription license portability today:

  • VMs — vSphere, Hyper-V, AHV — Veeam Backup & Replication
  • Physical servers — Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux
  • Physical workstations — Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux
  • Enterprise application support — Oracle RMAN and SAP HANA Veeam Backup & Replication
  • Cloud native workloads — AWS instances and databases — Veeam Backup & Replication for AWS
  • Management — Veeam ONE
  • Veeam Cloud Connect
What products are not yet available on Veeam’s NEW portable Subscription licensing model?

At this time, the following products are still sold using individual Subscription licenses instead of the portable subscription instances. These are expected to join the new per-instance model in 2019:

  • Veeam Management Pack
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365
  • Veeam Availability Orchestrator
  • Veeam Agents for IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris
Does Veeam offer Perpetual licenses for Veeam Agents and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365?
No, these products are only available via a Subscription license.
How do I continue my subscription term?
To continue using your Veeam products via an Instance license subscription, you simply purchase an additional Instance license prior to your current term expiring.
Is it possible to reduce a multi-year subscription term to a one-year term?
No, this is not available.
How can I migrate from a perpetual product contract to an Instance license?
Customers can migrate from Perpetual socket-based licenses to Subscription Instance licensing by purchasing a promotional migration SKU. This SKU is to be used for existing customers with Perpetual per-socket licenses looking to convert to Subscription Instance licenses. Purchasing this SKU extends support on the Perpetual license for one or two years and converts the contract from perpetual to subscription instances. Any added workloads required by the customer beyond the migration limit must be purchased using instance subscription pricing. All migrated per-socket Perpetual licenses must be destroyed by the end user. Customers can purchase a two-year upfront SKU or renew annually for a period of one or two total years during the migration period. After this period, all migrated licenses will be renewed using Instance license pricing. Any product that is migrated from perpetual sockets to instances must be done for the full number of sockets in the customer’s total environment, regardless of individual contracts for that product. Partial migrations are not permitted.
