Frequently Asked Questions

Veeam licensing (all products)

Veeam® licenses software in a variety of ways depending on the specific product and/or use case you are interested in. This includes licensing by the number of CPU sockets on a managed server (or host), as well as by the number of VMs, physical servers, workstations, cloud instances and/or users being managed.

Veeam licensing terms

Veeam offers a variety of license terms. For more information on product availability please contact your Veeam ProPartner.

Perpetual license

Software licenses and use of the products do not expire. One year of basic support and maintenance is included with any new perpetual license purchased.

Stay current on maintenance to get:

  • Product updates and new major versions.
  • Access to technical support
  • Access to license keys management portal

Please note: You won’t be able to manage and download license keys if your maintenance expires. Veeam advises customers to always make a backup of all license files. For more information, please visit our Support Renewals FAQ.

Subscription license

Subscription licensing allows customers to lower upfront costs while licensing over a defined period of time.

Software licenses and use of the products expire at the end of the subscription term and include production 24x7 support.

One to five-year subscription licenses are available, and customers can choose to purchase the entire subscription up front, or pay annually. At the end of the license period, both the use of the product as well as support will be turned off. Customers can choose to purchase a new subscription license at the then-current rate to continue use.

Note: The availability of perpetual and subscription options differ by product. Please check at the product level to determine whether the product you are looking for is offered as a perpetual license, subscription license, or both.

Hosting Rental

Veeam Cloud & Service Provider program members can rent products on a monthly basis. A one-year commitment may be required. For more information, please visit the VCSP page.

General licensing FAQs

How can I obtain a license file for Veeam products?
If you have an active support contract, you can log in to the license management portal and download the license file. If you are not the license administrator for your account, you will have an option to send the file to the license administrator. If you can’t see your license files in the portal, please open a new licensing case.
Under what conditions can I merge or split licenses?

In order for two or more license files to be merged, they have to meet the following criteria:

  • All license files must have active support contracts
  • All license files must be issued for the same product and edition
  • The license administrator for all license files is the same
  • All license files must be issued for the same company

If the above criteria are met, you should see a Merge button in the license management portal. After clicking on it, you will be able to choose the license files that need to be merged. For more information, please review the License Management Portal Guide.

Note: When merging two or more license files, the merged license will have the earliest expiration date. E.g., you have two license files, one expires on Dec. 30, 2017 and the other on Feb. 1, 2018. The merged license file will expire on Dec. 30, 2017. Even though your merged license file will have an earlier support expiration date, you will still continue to receive technical support in accordance with your support contract(s).
To split a license file, please open a licensing case on the licensing portal by using the “Get Support” tab.

How can I find who the license administrator is for my company?
Please visit the Veeam Licensing Portal to view the License Administrator for each Support ID (contract number).  To request a License Administrator change, please open a licensing case.
How can I change the license administrator?
In case you want to change the license administrator or share administrative rights, please open a case by logging into My Account, click the “Support” tab, “Open a case,” choose “Licensing,” then select “Change/Add license administrator” from the dropdown and fill in all the required information, as also shown in the image below:
Can I use an older license file with the most recent software release?
It depends. If the license file and software version match (for example, both are v9), then the license will work. If they do not match, the file will not allow installation. For example, if you try to apply a v8 license to a v9 installation, you will receive a “License expired” error message. You can always download a license file for current, as well as the most recent previous version of our products from the license management portal.
To confirm the license file version, please open using any text editor application.
Can I change a trial license to a paid license without losing data?
Yes. Simply go to Help -> License -> Install license and point to your new license file. None of your jobs, settings and backup files will be affected.
If I upgrade my license file will I lose any of my saved data or jobs?
Do I have to reinstall Veeam products when I change the license file?
No. If you are upgrading to a new version, simply run the installer and point it to the license file for the version that is being installed.
I have an active support contract and want to continue using an old version of Veeam. How do I obtain an older license?
If you need a license file for a version of Veeam that is no longer supported, please open a licensing case. You can download a license file for the current and previous version of our products from the portal.
How do I renew my support?
To renew your support, please complete a request for a renewal quote.
How do I upgrade my license to another edition?
Upgrade SKUs are available for purchase. Please see this comparison document to understand which features are included in each edition. To upgrade, please visit the Veeam Licensing Portal.
How can I merge my licenses?
Merges, upgrades and downgrades can only be made by a designated license administrator listed in your license file. For detailed instructions, follow this document and ensure that all prerequisites for the license merge operation are met.
How do I install a new license key in the product?

Veeam Backup & Replication:
To add a new key to an installed Veeam Backup & Replication™, please follow these steps in User Console:
Menu -> Help -> License -> Install license
Please visit this page for details.

Veeam ONE:
For Veeam ONE™, apply it via “Veeam ONE Monitor client -> Help -> License information” or “Veeam ONE Reporter Web UI -> Configuration -> License.” Please visit this page for details.

Can I downgrade product editions (for example from Enterprise Plus to Enterprise)?

Yes, product edition downgrades are possible. There is no penalty or fee for product edition downgrades, however, please note:

  • Veeam does NOT refund the difference in price between editions
  • After downgrading, any upgrades must be purchased
  • Upon expiration of your current support contract, your maintenance renewal will be at the then current edition rate
  • Edition changes do not change original support contract dates
  • Only customers who are current on support are eligible for downgrades

Veeam requires the signature of a Letter of Destruction (LOD) by the end user indicating that the higher edition license has been destroyed in order to create a new license file. To request an edition downgrade, please contact Veeam sales or your preferred ProPartner.

Can I swap my licensed sockets between VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors?
Yes. You can swap your licensed sockets between VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors at any time by creating a Licensing Case. To facilitate the conversion, you can get a free temporary license file with the total number of licensed sockets for both hypervisors. This will allow coexistence of environments on the same backup server. This license file is valid for three months and can be extended upon request (for large socket-count environments only). Technical support for both hypervisors is included at no charge for the temporary license duration. Only customers who are current on support are eligible for swaps.
Can I use the same licensed sockets swap process for the AHV hypervisor?
Not at this time. Today the AHV hypervisor has a separate process to migrate between existing VMware or Hyper-V Veeam licenses to AHV.  Refer to the Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV FAQs for more information, or contact your Veeam Sales Representative for more details.
I am a Partner and want to manage my end users’ licenses. How can I do this?
Please open a licensing case with a confirmation from your end user(s). Make sure to include their contract numbers (to find and open the license file). Alternatively, your end user can open a licensing case and ask for the license administrator to be changed to you.
I’m a service provider. Can I use my Veeam licenses to manage my clients’ VMs?
Only if you have purchased Veeam Hosting or Cloud Provider licenses. To confirm if you have the correct licenses, contact your Veeam Sales Representative.
What is Automatic License Update?
Starting with version 7.0 patch 4, Veeam Backup & Replication supports automatic license update. With this feature enabled, Veeam backup server (or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server, if deployed) proactively communicates with Veeam licensing portal to receive a new license before the current license expires. For more information on how to enable this feature, please review the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide for VMware and for Hyper-V.

Are there minimum purchase requirements?

Yes, there are purchase minimums including:

Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux:

  • Workstation: Minimum five (5) licenses per order

Note: Only one agent is required per server or workstation instance (i.e., per on-premises physical server/workstation or per public cloud instance).

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365:

Does Veeam offer perpetual licenses for the Veeam Agents and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365?
No. These products are only available via a subscription license.
How do I continue my subscription?
To continue using your Veeam products via a subscription, you simply purchase an additional subscription license prior to your current subscription expiring.
Is it possible to reduce a multi-year subscription to a one-year subscription?
No, this is not available.
How can I migrate from a perpetual product contract to a subscription license?
Customers can migrate from perpetual socket-based licenses to subscription licensing by purchasing a migration SKU. This SKU is to be used for existing customers with perpetual per-socket licenses looking to migrate to subscription per-VM licenses (in order to purchase additional licenses by VM). Purchasing this SKU extends support on the perpetual license for one or two years and converts the contract from perpetual to subscription. Any added VMs required by the customer beyond the migration limit must be purchased using per-VM subscription pricing. All migrated per socket perpetual licenses must be destroyed by the end user. After migration all further purchases related to the migrated licenses will be based on per-VM subscription prices. Customers can purchase a two-year upfront SKU or renew annually for a period of one or two total years during the migration period. After this period, all migrated licenses will be renewed using per-VM subscription prices. Any product which is migrated from perpetual sockets to subscription VMs must be done for the full number of sockets in the customer’s total environment, regardless of individual contracts for that product. No partial migrations are allowed.
